1.What is a high voltage bushing?

A bushing is a device for carrying one or more high voltage conductors through

 an earthed barrier such as a wall or a metal tank. It must provide electrical insulation

 for the rated voltage and for service overvoltages and also serve 

as mechanical support for the conductor and external connections.

2.How do high voltage bushings work?

These seemingly simple devices perform the critical function of 

carrying current at high voltage through equipment enclosures. 

They perform this function by providing an insulating barrier between the live conductor

 and the metallic (conducting) body of the electrical apparatus (which is at ground potential).

3.What is the purpose of bushing?

Bushings are akin to thin tubes most commonly used for machinery with rotating or sliding shafts to

 improve efficiency and reduce vibration and noise. Bushings can be used for drilling operations in drill jigs, 

hydraulic external gear pumps and motors.

4.What are the three types of bushing?

Bushing materials include cast or machined metals, stabilized polymers (“plastics”), 

fiber-wound composites, and combinations of different types of materials.
